Bangladesh ... |
|
That country at the bay of Bengal,
shallow
alluvium nerved by numerous rivers, one
of the
world's poorest countries
That country with the world's
densest
population
That country where people with
different
religions manage to live side by side in
peace
That country of the unpropertied
day laborers
whose primary work is in the paddy fields
That country where 40 % of the
land is
flooded during rainy seasons
That country without pebbles
That country of ample markets
and low prices
That country that is dominated
by men
That country with a woman as the
Prime
minister and a woman as the opposition
leader
That country where nobly robed
women sit
in trishaws of emciated men
That country with sweet tea and
hot dishes
That country of scenic paddy
fields littered
with waste
That country where you can experience
the
Islam in a different way
That country of piercing looks,
of self
confident curiosity and of timid respect
That country of music and klaxons
That country where your eyes
will discover
swirling vibrancy while your mind can find
peace

My Bengal of gold, I love you.
Forever your skies,
your air set my heart in tune
As if it were a flute.
In spring, O mother mine, the fragrance from
your mango grove
Makes me wild with joy
Ah, what a thrill!
In autumn, O mother mine,
In the full blossomed paddy fields
I have seen spread all over sweet smiles.
Ah, what a beauty, what shades, what
an affection
And what a tenderness!
What a quilt have you spread at the feet of
Banyan trees
And along the banks of rivers!
O mother mine, words from your lips
Are like nectar to my ears.
Ah, what a thrill!
If sadness, O mother mine, casts a gloom on
your face,
eyes are filled with tears!
National anthem of Bangladesh
Rabindranath Tagore
